Set a regular time for cleaning

Set a day and time and stick to it every week. One hour a week is all most households need to stay on top of everything. Once the basics are covered, (dusting, vacuuming, moping, bathrooms and kitchen) add one extra job each week such as high dusting, cleaning light shades or cleaning the skirting boards. Within a few weeks you will have your whole house in order. After you have done all the small jobs, once, they will get easier and easier as you stay on top of them.

Make a List

List making sounds like your giving yourself an extra job before you even start your cleaning but the reality is that lists simplify your life. Take a minute to plan ahead. Writing down everything you need to achieve, will clear your head and give you something to work towards. You will be able to focus clearly on the task at hand, or, think about something else. Even if you don't enjoy list making you will enjoy crossing things off your list.

Take your time

Cleaning should take about the same amount of time every week. You can definitely clean too fast. It's much easier and faster to vacuum at the speed of the machine. This means that you will only have to go over each spot once, rather than going over it again and again because you have moved too fast and achieved not enough, besides making yourself tired.

Choose the right tools

Spreading dust or dirt around rather than picking it up and containing it can make cleaning seem like an impossible task. Good quality Microfiber cloths pick up and contain dirt. Keep plenty of cloths on hand. At least one cloth per room. This will stop you from spreading dirt around with dirty cloths and keep your home hygienic by not cross contaminating from surfaces used for food preparation or cleaning your body. Also empty out your vacuum regularly. An empty vacuum cleaner has better suction which will make this task much easier.

Make it smell nice

A nice smelling house will feel cleaner.

Put a few drops of essential oils with some water in a spray bottle to use while dusting. Scented dryer sheets can be placed in your vacuum cleaner and will release a pleasant odor while you clean. They may seem like small things but little touches that won't take time will freshen your whole house.

Get noticed

A little praise goes a long way. Take pride in what you have done. Stand back and admire your hard work. Leave the clean clothes folded on the bed so that everyone can see what you have been doing. Fold the toilet paper on the roll so that everyone remembers to admire the sparkling bowl on their way in.
